Zero-Click Search: Winning When Nobody Visits Your Website

Zero-Click Search: Winning When Nobody Visits Your Website

The scariest chart in marketing right now is the click-through curve: more questions answered on the results page (or in the chat) means fewer visits to anyone’s website — yours included. The instinct is to fight it. The smarter play is to change what you’re optimizing for.

The impression is the new visit

When Google’s AI overview or a chatbot names you as a source, most people won’t click — but the name registers. Local businesses have lived this way for years with the map pack: the profile gets the call, the website never sees the visitor. Treat AI answers the same way. The KPI isn’t sessions; it’s whether the phone rings from people who feel like they already vetted you.

Three adjustments

  • Put your identity in the quotable layer. If the first two sentences of your page are the extractable answer, make sure the surrounding context carries who you are and where you work — attribution travels with the quote.
  • Move conversion off the website. Call buttons, booking links, and profiles need to work for someone who will never read your homepage.
  • Measure what still reaches you. Branded search volume, direct calls, “heard about you from ChatGPT” intake answers. Imperfect, but directionally honest.

Zero-click isn’t the death of content. It’s the end of content whose only job was harvesting a click.
